Vitamin C’s efficacy in skincare stems from two primary mechanisms. These fundamental functions explain why vitamin C has become indispensable in individuals seeking solutions to their skincare needs:
1. Powerful antioxidant protection: Vitamin C helps protect the skin against environmental stressors such as pollution and UV exposure, which can contribute to visible signs of aging, dullness, and uneven skin tone.
2. Brightening effects: Vitamin C helps reduce the appearance of uneven tone, discoloration, and dullness, supporting a more radiant and even-looking complexion over time.
Vitamin C is not a single ingredient experience—it is a family of molecules with different stability, strength, and skin compatibility.
In skincare chemistry, vitamin C exists in two main categories:
- Direct Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)
- Vitamin C Derivatives
Choosing the right form is what determines whether vitamin C feels transformative—or irritating.
L-Ascorbic Acid is the most potent, bioactive, and scientifically studied form of vitamin C.
However, in chemistry, potency comes with trade-offs.
1. It is highly effective
2. Highly unstable in the presence of water and oxygen so formulation matters
3. More likely to cause tingling or sensitivity in reactive skin types
Ascorbic Acid is best suited for more resilient skin types and we find is an essential ingredient in any anti-aging protocol. We find it is best to use Ascorbic Acid paired with Peptides instead of a Retinoid and Niacinamide at first. Both of these can cause irritation so we like to begin L Ascorbic Acid and then 8 weeks later pair with a retinoid for wrinkles. For anti-aging, Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C can be used both morning and night. Sensitive skin may find this form too reactive, especially at higher concentrations and in this case a derivative would be a replacement.
2. Neogenesis Vibrant C Serum
What we love about Vivant C+E Serum is there is a regenerative phenomenon between vitamin C and E - they make each other work harder. They restore and enhance each other. The derivatives do not.

Vitamin C derivatives are chemically modified forms of vitamin C. Unlike L-Ascorbic Acid, derivatives must convert into active vitamin C once absorbed into the skin. This makes them:
- Gentler more stable in water-based formulas
- Better tolerated by sensitive or beginner skin
We like Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate for sensitive skin. It is not nearly as effective as L-Ascorbic Acid when the concern is anti-aging but it is more gentle. With continued use you can see improvements in dullness and brightness but not nearly as quickly as L-Ascorbic Acid. It also is limited with supporting collagen synthesis for wrinkle support. But that said, there are select formulas that have other ingredients that help MAP work more effectively which we recommend below.
- Gentle, hydrating vitamin C derivative
- Supports brightness without irritation
- Often used in sensitive-skin formulations
- DMK Beta Gel (Call to order (630) 488-6334)
We like Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate as an addition to L-Ascorbic acid (can be used together) or by itself for sensitive skin types.
- Oil-soluble vitamin C derivative
- Deeply penetrating and lipid-compatible
- Remains highly stable in formulations
- Resists oxidation far better than L-Ascorbic Acid
- Hydrinity Hydri-C Daily Vitamin C Moisturizer
We like Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate for breakout prone skin as it can aid in clarifying the skin of congestion.
- Very stable, water-soluble form
- Known for calming + anti-blemish support
- Often used in acne-prone skincare routines
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate Formulations:
Think of vitamin C like this:
- L-Ascorbic Acid = fast, powerful, reactive chemistry
- Derivatives = slower, stabilized, controlled release chemistry
- There are many Vitamin C that are not effective and not formulated to be stable. Buyer beware.
With effective Vitamin C, you should begin to see a noticable difference in your skin rather quickly. Not all Vitamin C is effective or formulated to work. We love Dr. Fulton caveat about Vitamin C:
"Consumer, beware of all the new stuff. If your skin does not react, develop a rosy hue and begin to feel tight, you have wasted your money. "
